IN MEMORIAM: RAM KUMAR - A MODERN MASTER, 1924 - 2018

Ram Kumar was a prolific painter and a passionate writer, with a creative career spanning over seven decades since he gave up his job at a bank to learn art under Sailoz Mukherjee at Sharda Ukil School of Art in 1948. Born into large family in Shimla, Ram Kumar initially pursued his MA in Economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. However soon after his introduction to art, in 1949 he borrowed money from his father and travelled to Paris to study art with the support of a French Embassy scholarship.

मिथिला चित्रकला, मंजूषा चित्रकला और अन्य सभी हस्तशिल्प परंपराएं समूह की अवधारणा पर आधारित हमारी लोक कला परंपराएं हैं और समाज की रुचि, कल्पना और संघर्ष की अभिव्यक्ति के सबसे पुराने माध्यम भी। इन अभिव्यक्तियों का शिल्प और उसका स्वरूप समय के साथ-साथ बदलता रहा है। बदलाव के इस क्रम में कई बार यह प्रतीत होता है कि हमारी लोककलाओं की धार कुंद हो रही है, लेकिन यह लोक ही है, जो अपनी कला-संस्कृति की रक्षा हेतु तत्पर रहता है, बशर्ते उन्हें उचित प्रोत्साहन मिले, सहयोग मिले।

Selina Ting, Editor of initiartmagazine.com had interview Hema Upadhyay in Paris on March 14, 2011.

Baroda born and Mumbai based, Hema Upadhyay (*1972) uses photography and sculptural installations to explore notions of personal identity, dislocation, nostalgia and gender. Upadhyay draws on her own personal and family history of migration to express her concerns and this is expressed through the way she portrays herself in her works and the urban slums in her installations.

Robust and vulnerable by turns, artist Hema Upadhyay was a special person and a very thoughtful artist. Her tragic end is a cautionary tale for our art world – about the Balzacian turn that we took during the art boom of roughly a decade ago, and which continues to be one of the troubling legacies of that period.
